چکیده

This paper contributes to the debate on the inducement of environmental innovations by analysing the extent to which endogenous inducement mechanisms spur the generation of greener technologies in contexts characterized by weak exogenous inducement pressures. In the presence of a fragile environmental regulatory framework, inducement can indeed be endogenous and environmental innovations may be spurred by firms’ reactions to their direct or related environmental performance. Cross-sector analysis focuses on a panel of Italian regions, over the time span 2003-2007, and is conducted by implementing zero-inflated regression models for count data variables. The empirical results suggest that in a context characterized by a weak regulatory framework, such as the Italian one, environmental performance has significant and complementary withinand between-sector effects on the generation of green technologies. Challenge of biofuel: filling the tank without emptying the stomach?

Biofuels have become a leading alternative to fossil fuel because they can be produced domestically by many countries, require only minimal changes to retail distribution and end-use technologies, are a partial response to global climate change, and because they have the potential to spur rural development. Production of biofuel has increased most rapidly for corn ethanol, in part because of go...

Technology Prizes for Climate Change Mitigation

We analyze whether technology inducement prizes could be a useful complement to standard research grants and contracts in developing climate change mitigation technologies. We find that there are important conceptual advantages to using inducement prizes in certain circumstances. These conceptual inferences are borne out by an examination of the track record of prizes inducing research into pub...

Regulatory Externalities as a Driver of Corporate Environmental Performance

We hypothesize that regulatory externalities (i.e., regulations in jurisdictions beyond where a firm operates) can influence a firm’s environmental behavior. Specifically, we predict that firms will be sensitive to regulations both in neighboring jurisdictions and in jurisdictions where peer firms operate. By examining the use of renewable-generating technologies in the U.S. electrical utility ...
